Five local girls are part of a regional soccer team that recently earned back-to-back top finishes in the Jefferson Cup College Showcase in Richmond, Va.
Five girls from Spring Valley, Ridge View and Blythewood high schools are part of the South Carolina United FC’s 96 Girls Elite team that tied for first place in the Jefferson Cup College Showcase. Below is information provided by Coach Tomasz Kluszczynski: The Jefferson Cup, which was held March 15-17, has become associated with tournaments such as the Dallas Cup, The San Diego Surf Cup, WAGS Women’s Tournament, and the Disney College Showcase as one of the five premier North American tournaments in the country. Byrnes' Alex Cunningham dominates Spring Valley in a 10-0 Monday win.
Following a 10-0 Monday loss to Byrnes, the Spring Valley High School baseball team faces elimination Tuesday night in a district battle with Easley. The Rebels' Alex Cunningham tossed a no-hitter against the Vikings on Monday, striking out 12 in the six-inning contest. Easley, meanwhile, eliminated Dutch Fork in a losers' bracket game. The Tuesday game will be at Spring Valley High.

Xylina McDaniel represents Spring Valley High at All-America Game
Basketball star Xylina McDaniel will represent Spring Valley High School for the last time Wednesday during the McDonald's All-America game. McDaniel will join 23 of the nation's top high school girls' basketball players for the annual all-star game at 6 p.m. Wednesday in Chicago. The game will be televised on ESPNU. Spring Valley head coach Anne Long will also find herself in a unique position for the game, as she will coach against McDaniel for the first time while leading the East all-stars. Long, a 2012 inductee to the South Carolina Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame, will return to coach the Vikings next year without her star player. Schools, centers recognized for achievement
Three of Richland Two's four high schools earned Palmetto Gold awards Monday for their consistent growth and improvement. A total of 25 Richland Two schools earned gold or silver recognition from the S.C. Department of Education. Lake Carolina Elementary, Ridge View High and Blythewood High earned Gold awards in both the "General Performance" category and the "Closing the Achievement Gap" category, which honors schools with high achievement from African-American, Hispanic, disabled and impoverished students. “This significant improvement shown in the number of schools receiving this award underscores the district’s commitment to meeting the needs of every child,” said Richland Two Superintendent Katie Brochu. Trustees approve 8 percent capital improvements budget Tuesday night
The Richland Two Board of Trustees approved its capital improvements budget Tuesday and authorized a number of upgrades throughout the district. The 8 percent capital improvements budget represents a total investment of $4,223,130. A full breakdown of projects can be viewed in the attached PDF, but here’s a look at some of the most expensive projects. Board member James Manning briefly delayed the vote on the budget after a parent raised concerns about the athletic fields at Richland Northeast. Spring Valley girls basketball star Asia Dozier named state's best
Asia Dozier quietly helped her Spring Valley girls' basketball team to unprecedented success during the past four years in the shadow of a highly touted teammate. Now, Dozier and fellow star Xylina McDaniel each have an individual award for their trophy cases. Dozier earned the title of Gatorade Player of the Year, giving Spring Valley High School its second winner in as many years. McDaniel won the award during 2011. The award is presented to the state's best girls and boys basketball players each year. Dozier earned all-state honors during each of her four years at Spring Valley and maintained a 4.34 GPA. Film viewing at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday
The National Honor Society chapter at Spring Valley High School will host a fundraiser Wednesday for an organization helping women in Ethiopia. Students in the organization will screen the documentary "A Walk to Beautiful," in the Spring Valley High auditorium at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $2 and proceeds will support The Fistula Foundation. The documentary focuses on five Ethiopian women suffering because of obsteric fistulas, which result from child birth and often cause infection and social ostracism in developing countires. The students hope to raise $5,000 for the foundation, which provides medical treatment for women with fistulas in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Spring Valley senior earns highest high school honor
Xylina McDaniel's high school career comprises numerous personal achievements, but Thursday's may be her greatest. McDaniel earned a spot on the McDonald's All-America team, one of 24 girls in the country to receive the recognition. “It’s a great honor and it brings a lot of glory to my team and the state,” McDaniel told The State. "This just lets me know, as we’re going for one more state championship, I’ve got to keep working hard." McDaniel, who is headed to the University of North Carolina in the fall, earned Gatorade Player of the Year honors in South Carolina last year, and was the only South Carolina player to make the 2012 All-America team. Staff donated more than ever
Richland Two staff members earned top honors from the United Way for their fundraising efforts during 2011. The district received the Division Chairman Award after its staff members raised $88,000 for the 2011 Live United campaign. Staff at the new Westwood High School raised the most per capita, with more than $150. Staff at the District Office and the Support Service Center averaged between $100 and $149 each. Other schools showed significant improvement in their donation levels and earned Merit Award recognition. Those schools included Spring Valley High School, Killian Elementary, Blythewood Middle and Lake Carolina Elementary. Westwood High and Lake Carolina joined schools like Catawba Trail and Langford Elementary by generating 100 …
