Spring Valley NHS to Host Fistula Fundraiser

Film viewing at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday

The National Honor Society chapter at Spring Valley High School will host a fundraiser Wednesday for an organization helping women in Ethiopia. Students in the organization will screen the documentary "A Walk to Beautiful," in the Spring Valley High auditorium at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $2 and proceeds will support The Fistula Foundation. The documentary focuses on five Ethiopian women suffering because of obsteric fistulas, which result from child birth and often cause infection and social ostracism in developing countires. The students hope to raise $5,000 for the foundation, which provides medical treatment for women with fistulas in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Book, Teacher Serve as "Call to Action" For Spring Valley Club

New group raises money, awareness for international causes

Sometimes, one book, one teacher or one group can bring about meaningful change. In the case of Spring Valley High School’s Call To Action club, all three of those things have improved the lives of people living thousands of miles away. Last year, students in Dr. Lars Seiler’s human geography classes read “Half the Sky,” a book by New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof that tells vivid stories about the oppression and suffering of young women and girls half a world away.
