When the game resumes at Wade Hampton Wednesday evening, Blythewood will have a runner at second, one out and No. 20 will be in the batter's box with a 3-1 count. The second round of the 4A baseball playoffs was suspended after a heavy rain soaked the field Tuesday night. The game, originally scheduled for 7 p.m., was delayed until 7:30 p.m. while crews tried to repair the damage already done by a storm earlier in the evening. Just before the first pitch, the sun appeared from behind the clouds. However, the sun was short-lived as the rain began to fall softly. Tyler Romanik was at bat for the Bengals. The magazine's annual rankings of 2,000 top high school includes 19 from South Carolina.
Three Columbia high schools — Spring Valley, A.C. Flora and Dreher — are among the nation's elite schools, according to a new ranking released Monday. The schools were three of 19 SC schools included in Newsweek's "America's Best High Schools" report. Here are the 19 SC schools, with the ranking, town and Newsweek score (a 4.00 was the top score available):

Courtney Noh, a Spring Valley High School student, was named to the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program. The program was extended to recognize students who demonstrate exceptional talent in the visual, creative and performing arts, a press release stated. Only 141 students are named as Presidential Scholars.
Parents are encouraged to bring proof of residency papers to the school guidance office before the school year lets out.
Richland School District Two continues to require proof-of-residence documentation for all students. Proof of residency documents include: completely executed rental lease, or a real estate purchase contract. All documents must be dated within 30 days of the date on which they are submitted to the school, the Richland Two website stated. Click here for more information.

85 percent of graduating seniors this year chosen caps and gowns made from recycled materials.
Clemson University students who will receive degrees May 10 were able to buy caps and gowns made of recycled plastic bottles. Not only are they almost indistinguishable from the traditional caps and gowns, they are manufactured in the U.S. and can be recycled after graduation. There will be recycling bins at the on-campus Barnes and Noble bookstore, which partnered with the Division of Student Affairs to offer the "green" caps and gowns. The recycled versions cost $3 more than traditional caps and gowns. The extra goes to a Clemson sustainability fund to promote other environmentally friendly projects. The manufacturer, Oak Hall Cap and Gown, has agreed to donate an additional 25 cents to the fund for each cap and gown sold. “We decided …

The students' project on improving drop-off and pick-up procedures at their school won the Law Related Education Middle School Project Citizen Showcase.
Submitted by the S.C. Bar. Students from Lonnie B. Nelson Elementary School's ACE Program have won the S.C. Bar Law Related Education (LRE) 2013 Project Citizen Championship title at the middle school level, marking it the fourth time the school has won. The project, titled "Bee Safe at the Hive in the Traffic Line," addressed the need for improved drop-off and pick-up procedures in the car pick up line at schools to improve safety.
