Alexia Junker, a sophomore International Baccalaureate student, will be learning the Chinese language and serve as a citizen diplomat in China this summer.
A Richland Northeast High student will spend her summer in China thanks to a scholarship from the National Security Language Initiative for Youth. Alexia Junker, a sophomore International Baccalaureate student, will be learning the Chinese language and serve as a citizen diplomat while developing the skills necessary to be a leader in the global community, according to a Richland School District Two release. The program is funded by the U.S. Department of State and provides merit-based scholarships for eligible high school students to learn less commonly-taught languages in summer and academic year overseas immersion programs. Killian Elementary School announced the winners of its Mr. and Miss Killian pageant.
Lights, cameras, glitter, and glamor was all around the students of Killian Elementary. Students were voted on by their peers to participate in the Mr. and Miss Killian pageant from every grade level. It was a bright sparkling night as the winners walked down the red carpet in evening gowns and tuxedos to the stage for the crowing of the kings and queens. The beautiful young ladies and handsome young men entertained the crowd with their beauty and dancing skills. Monique Williams from WOLO-TV was the Mistress of Ceremonies. Soldiers with the 120th Adjutant General Battalion guided students through several stations including an obstacle course, land navigation, and physical training during the Sandlapper Star Ride Monday.
Students at Sandlapper Elementary School were able to experience one part of a soldier's life through a mini boot camp loosely based on an Army Cavalry tradition. Soldiers with the 120th Adjutant General Battalion guided students through several stations including an obstacle course, first aid, range (ball targets), land navigation, physical training and using the phonetic alphabet during the Sandlapper Star Ride Monday. Capt. Nick Chaisson said the 120th Adjutant General Battalion partnered with Sandlapper Elementary in the group's effort to give back to those that support them. The start of the 2013-2014 school year will find seven familiar Richland Two administrators and principals in new positions.
Richland School District Two has announced several principal changes for the 2013-14 school year. The appointments are as follows: Ms. Elliott has served 35 years in education, all in Richland Two. She has served for 16 years as principal of Pontiac Elementary School and nine years as assistant principal. She taught at Keels Elementary School for 12 years where she was selected Teacher of the Year. She received her bachelor’s degree from Columbia College, and her master’s in elementary education and a Master’s Plus 30 certificate in administration from USC. She was recently named Principal of the Year by the S.C. Council for Exceptional Children and is a former Columbia Jaycee’s Young Educator of the Year. Ms. Eubanks began her teaching …

Update: Blythewood remained alive Wednesday night, downing Lexington 7-2 at home to force a third and deciding game in the AAAA state baseball championship series. The Wildcats and Bengals will face off Friday at Carolina Stadium at 7 for the state title. After taking an early 2-1 lead over Blythewood, Lexington was unable to get anything going on offense and the Bengals bats came alive.
