Photos: Killian Elementary's "Night on the Red Carpert"

Killian Elementary School announced the winners of its Mr. and Miss Killian pageant.

Lights, cameras, glitter, and glamor was all around the students of Killian Elementary. Students were voted on by their peers to participate in the Mr. and Miss Killian pageant from every grade level. It was a bright sparkling night as the winners walked down the red carpet in evening gowns and tuxedos to the stage for the crowing of the kings and queens.  The beautiful young ladies and handsome young men entertained the crowd with their beauty and dancing skills. Monique Williams from WOLO-TV was the Mistress of Ceremonies.  The winners for the night are (grade level, title, name): The overall winners were fourth-grade students Joshua Burrell and Makaila English. Elementary School Student Asks Nikki Haley About Husband's Return

The youngster was on a field trip from New Providence Elementary School.

After being peppered with questions about ethics legislation and the budget, Gov. Nikki Haley fielded a question from a visiting member of the press corps... The question came from a student from New Providence Elementary School in Lexington visiting the Statehouse on a class trip (she got an assist from Andrew Shain of The State). 3 Ways to Help Oklahoma Tornado Victims

People across the country are wondering what they can do to help.

After a devatasting tornado struck the town of Moore, OK, on Monday, many Midlands residents are asking what they can do to help. First, you can text REDCROSS to 90999 to donate $10, according to this NBC report.  You can also text STORM to 80888 to donate $10 to the Salvation Army relief efforts.  The Oklahoma Baptist Disaster Relief is taking donations online and via phone. Donate through their website here or call (405) 942-3800 to make a tax-deductible donation, USA Today reports.  Stay with Patch for more local ways to help the victims.  Patch asks: Will you be making a donation to the Oklahoma tornado victims?  Also, if you know of any fundraisers being organized in the area, comment with details on this story.

Soldiers with the 120th Adjutant General Battalion guided students through several stations including an obstacle course, land navigation, and physical training during the Sandlapper Star Ride Monday.

Students at Sandlapper Elementary School were able to experience one part of a soldier's life through a mini boot camp loosely based on an Army Cavalry  tradition. Soldiers with the 120th Adjutant General Battalion guided students through several stations including an obstacle course, first aid, range (ball targets), land navigation, physical training and using the phonetic alphabet during the Sandlapper Star Ride Monday. Capt. Nick Chaisson said the 120th Adjutant General Battalion partnered with Sandlapper Elementary in the group's effort to give back to those that support them. Brett Parker, an Irmo man on trial for double murder, owed $175,000 to a former Midlands bookie, according to testimony in day eight of the trial.  Lanny Ray Gunter, a man in serving time in federal prison after pleading guilty to a gambling charge, testified that Brett Parker owed him $175,00, according to WIS. Parker was paying off the debt by $5,000 or $10,000 a month. Family and friends of Bryan Capnerhurst, who was found shot dead along with Brett Parker's wife in the Parkers' Ascot Estates home in April 2012, also testified Monday, according to The State. They all said Capnerhurst never owned a gun or talked about guns. Brett Parker's attorneys say Capnerhurst shot Tammy Parker, and Brett Parker then acted in self-defense when he …

I agree! Why was BC never investigated? His coworkers testified about how hardworking BC was yet also testified that he conducted gambling at work. When he went to Parker house he had called in sick that day to conduct more illegal business. Great use of taxpayer dollars.   more ›

Second Blythewood Home Burglary Suspect Arrested

Dameion Rhyhelee Rembert, 31, was arrested Monday and charged with burglary and grand larceny.

Richland County deputies arrested a second suspect in connection with a burglary of a Blythewood home earlier this month. Dameion Rhyhelee Rembert, 31, was arrested Monday and charged with burglary and grand larceny. A tip helped the sheriff's department's Fugitive Task Force in locating Rembert at an apartment in Cayce, according to a release. Rembert is the second suspect in a burglary at a home on Hialeah Park Lane in Blythewood on May 9. Jessica Lynn Hunt, 36, was arrested on May 17 and is also charged with burglary and grand larceny. Deputies say the two broke into the home by kicking in the garage door and a door leading into the home.  One person was at home at the time of the burglary and called 911 after "making contact with the …

4 Teens Charged After Car Break-in

Deputies say a tip led to the arrest of four teens in a car break-in in Northeast Columbia.

Richland County deputies arrested four teens accused of breaking into a car in a Northeast Columbia neighborhood. Ronald Pringle, 18; Ronald Sumter Jr., 19; Travon Felder, 19; and a 16-year-old were all charged with vehicle damaging or tampering with a vehicle. Additional charges could be forthcoming, Sheriff Leon Lott said in a release Monday. A citizen called 911 shortly before 1 a.m. on May 15 after seeing the teens checking for unlocked vehicles along the 400 block of Dahoon Drive and taking items from them, according to the release.  The suspects fled when they saw a citizen watching them.   Deputies responding to the call arrested the suspects near Dahoon Drive — one on Founders Ridge and the other three on Summit Parkway.  Pringle, …

Sgt. John "J.D." Meador of Columbia was one of seven soldiers honored in Columbia on Monday at the Fallen Soldiers Ceremony. The annual event, held at the Palmetto Club in Columbia, recognizes those South Carolina service members who made the ultimate sacrifice in the past year. The other six South Carolina soldiers who lost their lives: Families of those who died were presented a framed certificate from both Houses of the General Assembly, the South Carolina Palmetto State Hero Commendation, and a South Carolina State Flag. SC First Gentleman Back Home for Two Weeks Leave

Gov. Haley's husband Michael was deployed in January.

Governor Nikki Haley's husband Michael has returned home for two weeks of leave from his deployment in Afghanistan, the governor's office said on Monday. The First Gentleman was deployed on January 10 for a tour of 11 months and his leave was granted by his commanding officers. Two weeks is a customary amount of time for leave  for a soldier in Haley's position. As a result of her husband's return, the governor cleared her public schedule for the week, including a scheduled speech in Mount Pleasant on Monday morning.
