Spurrier Slams Swinney During Lattimore Celebration

Was the injured player's birthday the right time to bring up a rivalry?

Steve Spurrier knows his audience. In speaking to thousands of USC students Monday afternoon, Spurrier launched into a series of back-handed compliments and outright insults at Clemson's head coach, Dabo Swinney.

It started innocently enough: Swinney had spoken out about how highly he thought of Marcus Lattimore. Since the ceremony was in honor of Lattimore's birthday and recovery, Spurrier discussed the public figures who had wished him well.

Although he never named Swinney, he alluded to Clemson in a way that the students clearly understood (as judged from the cheers.)

"That school that used to beat us a lot and doesn't beat us much anymore," Spurrier said. "Usually when that coach talks about South Carolina, it's a bunch of garbage."

TigerIllustrated.com reported that Swinney issued a statement after being informed of Spurrier's comments through the university's sports information department.

"Even on what should be a really special day, I would think, taking off-color comments ... I really don't have a comment other than I'm embarrassed for him," Swinney said.

Patch asks: Was Marcus Lattimore's ceremony the proper time to bring up this rivalry? Did Spurrier cross a line?

Hey... most fo us know Spurrier is a jerk....but a good football coach.
Lynn Hart October 30, 2012 at 01:55 am
Spurrier is a real class act. If he knew, or knew and ignored, ALL Clemson fans and players were praying for Marcus. Marcus is a true man of character. Sever prominent Tiger starters posted prayers on Facebook for Marcus. Despite Spurrier, we pray for Marcus and his healing; and future career.

This is your last year in the spotlight Spurrier, enjoy it i guess....You and USC are done. Sorry to see Lattimore go down though, great kid.

Under any other circumstance, I'd tell offended Clemson fans to suck it up and shut up, because they are, by nature, interminably insufferable and arrogant. BUT I agree that Spurrier shows a complete lack of class here, which as a USC fan and graduate saddens me. The beautiful thing about Lattimore is that he transcends football. You can root against his team; hell, you can even hate his team. But, you can't, as a decent human being, root against Lattimore. He's that special. And even his supposed foes realize that. Fans of Georgia, Florida, Auburn, LSU -- all over the SEC -- have paid their respects. And so has Clemson. Some at Clemson have even started a prayer chain for Lattimore. There has even been talk of honoring Lattimore before this year's USC/Clemson game -- at Clemson! So Spurrier? Just shut up and coach.
Tiger October 30, 2012 at 02:42 am
Hal Millard, you, unlike your coach, ARE a class act. My prayers go out for Lattimore and even spurrier.

It wasn't that bad, quit over reacting! Y'all are worse than a bunch of girls!!!
Lynn Hart October 30, 2012 at 06:55 am
Hal, now that's real class!! Thanks
Brent.,,, not so much..... Typical!

It is good to know that some folks who make their living on the football field can see life past that field. Spurriers comments reveal which one he is.

I'm a Carolina fan and I've had 2 brothers and a sister graduate from USC. I had the opportunity to go to the Citadel, so I broke family tradition and became a Bull Dog. I find it funny and "odd" you people talk about "class" and tell the commenter "Hal" what a "class act" he is..I don't know how you can tell all that by reading one paragraph of a stranger... I don't know what you all consider a "class act" but I assure you it's not by telling a respected college football coach to "shut up and coach" especially when that person is a former Heisman Trophy winner, a respected Ex- NFL quarterback, and who currently as a coach has lead his teams to six (SEC) championships and won a National. Believe me, that's NOT "class act" behavior.

It's funny to me how short minded you clemson fans are. After dumbo's rant last year after South Carolina whipped clemson, I'd say Spurrier owes him quite a few "slams". Dumbo is usually the one running his mouth. I've been proud of Coach Spurrier and how he has handled himself against all the people opposed to him.

Did any of you watch the full video of the event and Spurriers comments??? At the end he said "I agree with him" regarding Marcus. It was clearly a dig at Clemson and Swinney but nowhere near a "slam" as this reporter iimplies. Get the whole story before jumping to judgement.
mike brazell October 30, 2012 at 02:09 pm
Hey there patch lets get the story straight you are starting to sound like the state paper making something out of nothing and not finishing the whole story. He stated at the end he agreed with clemsons tater coach so lets tell the story right or dont say anything at all. Listen to 107.5 the game for the actual story these guys tell it right and agree that spurrier said nothing out of line and one of them is a tater fan.
Jessie Gable (Editor) October 30, 2012 at 02:41 pm
Well, Mike, maybe you should watch the video.
Doug Limbaugh October 30, 2012 at 03:34 pm
Unfortunately, what is said off the field often overshadows what is done on the field. As leaders of young men, both coaches should show a bit more restraint and lead!
VonHeflen October 30, 2012 at 05:06 pm
Yeah, just like I thought.... selective journalism.. just like the Democrats VS the Republicans so lives the distain between Clemson and Carolina fans ... let me guess, the author of this "so called" story, wasn't really interested in reporting the real truth because the truth wouldn't have been a story at all...we can't trust anything we hear or see in the media these days. They control what, when, how, and how much of the content they expose us to.. they even bend it so that a certain view point is presented to us very subtle and we walk away feeling confidant that the end result was our own conclusions to the information given, NOT... and really, since when does ANYONE care about the opinion of the person reporting the news? We want to hear THE FACTS..just the FACTS.. not doctored or dressed up for flare, the newscasters and reporters can keep their opinions to themselves..I want to form MY OWN opinion, not force fed someone else's. I guess fabrication and exaggeration is the only route some media outlets, and network personalities feel they can create due to lack of talent and moral discipline. If it's a slow news day.. they use this tactic as an opportunity to pull, twist, turn, add, and omit their way into creating edgy news stories they claim to have exclusive information on. That is the case here.. this article was completely edited to portray Coach Spurrier in a negative light..that is unprofessional and tacky..whoever is responsible should correct this story.

I don't know why any high school player would ever go to South Carolina.
1) They've never won anything 2) They are a coach's graveyard 3) They hire low-class a-holes like Spurrier 4) The chicken curse will get you Makes no sense.
Right Here October 30, 2012 at 06:59 pm
You people are surprised that Spurrier is a jacka$$? Really?
Wounded Warrior October 30, 2012 at 07:23 pm
Never won anything? 2 national champ in baseball. Runner up last year. East division SEC champs 2 years ago. ACC champs last year. State champs last 3 years.
I agree it's not a rich history. What chicken curse? That has been expelled. I'm pretty sure the author of this one sided article is looking for any attention they can muster. Guess it worked. I watched the interview and while it wasn't the best time and place, it was a student event for prob the most popular athlete for the state in our lifetime. At least the most polarizing. It's a "dig". That's all it was. Spurrier has done this his whole career. Nobody should be surprised. Quit getting your feelings hurt. Want to get him back? Beat him.
Tom Utley October 30, 2012 at 07:32 pm
We're clearly talking football here, not baseball. Division championships don't count.
Wounded Warrior October 30, 2012 at 07:39 pm
When you have a history as scant as ours you use all. But even you can see the culture changing. The college football arena sees USC as a rising program.
High school players go to USC for the chance to play big time football for a big time coach for the best conference in the country. When a coaching, and player, legend expresses interest. You listen. Not too hard to understand.
Ashley Feagin October 31, 2012 at 02:51 am
I am a Clemson Fan and I bleed Orange and Purple! Lattimore is an awesome athlete and I pray for his speedy recovery. USC just wont be the same without him. Spurrier was out of line calling out the Tigers coach saying it was garbage wishing Lattimore well! Thats good sportsmanship on Dabo's part! Spurrier should grow up and see that! Somethings are more important that bashing Clemson all the time! GET WELL SOON MARCUS!!!! TIGER NATION LOVES YOU!!!!!
Em Shealy October 31, 2012 at 03:21 am
It's time to stop the bickering and remember what the day was for -- to wish Marcus Lattimore a Happy Birthday. He is bigger than all this nit-picking over words that have nothing to do about Marcus. Marcus is probably the most loved and respected USC player on campus that most people remember in the past decades. I still remember watching Steve Wadiak run that football and crying as I saw him in his coffin after the car wreck. He also was a very loved athlete. I am thankful that we still have Marcus and that he tells us that he will be back.

NO, But they will..."No child left behind" realy means "pass them on up theRead More line". the Exit Exam is the very last barrier. Even if they have classes to teach the test...
W. T. Walkup April 22, 2013 at 11:41 pm
I also have a problem when 4,000 out of 20,000 students can not pass the exit exam. Is it theRead More teaching? Some students may be weak in math or science, but O.K. in all other areas.

Hey Denise, why don't you explain what a "Living organ donor" is for those who might notRead More know.
Debbie DuBois Chastain Spires April 6, 2013 at 01:37 am
I would like for someone to tell me more about this inregards to a religious aspect.

I am a donor. 8 years ago my husband died unexpectedly. He was a donor and I was glad that theyRead More were able to use some of his skin, his corneas, heart, etc. It's like God's gift to us was able to keep on giving to others. 3 years ago, after many years and many surgeries and repairs, I needed a new ACL- ligament in my knee, thanks to a donor I have one. It's like the circle keeps going. And which one of us would not give an organ to our family, to our children, if it was a match?
