Justice Department: SC Voter ID Law Discriminatory

The law passed this year and signed by Gov. Haley required voters to present voter identification at the polls.

The U.S. Justic Department this afternoon rejected South Carolina's new voter ID law, calling it discriminatory against minorities.

More information is available from the Washington Post.

You can read the letter from the Justice Department at the right of this story.

South Carolina Republican Party Chairman Chad Connelly said today: "The Obama administration has once again decided that Washington knows best. Requiring voter identification is a common sense safeguard."

Despite efforts this fall by state officials to help South Carolina residents obtain photo identification cards, .

"This administration continues to trample on the states, and voters know that every potential Republican nominee would be one thousand times better than Barack Obama," Connelly stated.

The new law is one of several across the country meant to ensure proper elections, opponents have called the new law discriminatory against the poor and minorities.

The Twitter account for Rep. Joe Wilson, R-SC, wrote Friday night that it was "wrong" for President Obama to "limit our state's rights."

Yes Mimi, its Bush's fault, Europes fault, the weathers fault, the gulf spills fault, the congresses fault, the broken down printing presses fault. All while Obama sets the record for being a golf happy President.

Stanley, more like Stalin, Chaiman Mao, Kim Jong Il not so happy days if we follow the DNC's lead to the "new" and "improved" communism. Oh, excuse me, I meant "socialism" :)

back to voter fraud topic...
FYI [CLIP] However, voter fraud is already exceptionally rare. The South Carolina State Election Commission told the New York Times that it “knows of no confirmed cases of voter identification fraud... [end clip] http://www.annenbergclassroom.org/speakout/are-new-voting-laws-necessary-or-discriminatory ask numerous times without an answer: does anyone have any examples of "voter identification fraud"...ie, the type fraud SC voter ID laws supposedly corrects... if not then what is the purpose of the law...to suppress BO voters maybe...or surely not racism...

The Huffington post Mimi? Are you serious. You paste a bias article from the Huffington post and act like its factual. It's 5 am and I just got home from work. I can't wait to read this. It's funny, You liberals attack the ONE conservative leaning NEWS station(Fox News) It's like I posted before, Liberals believe anyone can do anything they want except disagree with them.
Clayton December 29, 2011 at 10:29 am
I didn't even start reading it yet and I can tell already how this article going to read. Did you look to see who wrote it Mimi?
Edward H. Levi Distinguished Service Professor of Law, University of Chicago Hmm, Who else is from Chicago? Some lawyer? Oh that's right, Obama. I go read your "Facts" now.
stanley seigler December 29, 2011 at 03:59 pm
@Clayton "a bias article..."
just because it's bias doesn't mean there are no facts...i read stuff from the heritage foundation. i disagree with their conclusions but dont dispute their facts... huf post say 'labeled "voodoo economics" a year earlier by his [RR] eventual running mate, George H. W. Bush...trickle-down, supply-side, tax-cutting economics -- "doesn't work." It has been tried, he [BO] said, and it "has never worked."' [end huf post] it didn't work in 1929 nor in 2008..so GOPs, .when did it work... top tax rate: 1940-1963: around 90% 1964-1980: around 70% 1981-1986: around 50% 1987-2011: around 35% tickle down, my sacchrine donkey...it's trickle up... starting around 1981 (time of tax cuts for the rich) til 2011 the income of the top 1% rose some 200%...income of the 99 remained same or declined...GOP economists confused up with down... tax cuts for the rich are paid for by cuts to safety net programs (medicare, social security, programs for the disabled), education (teachers), police, firemen, etcetc... let hear it for the compassionate conservatives... [NOTE: figs not exact, but close enough for talking points]
Clayton December 29, 2011 at 04:59 pm
Answered several times Satanley, and provided several examples of voter fraud. Once again like a typical Liberal you narrow you question, and keep asking the same question over and over again. This is a tactic I actually learned in SERE School. "Stay in my circle (asking a question over and over again, which is something you go back to every time you get proven wrong.) and they can't get to me." A very well known tactic used to frustrate an interpreter. I'll say it again. Individual voter fraud is the hardest to prove. First you ask "show me voter fraud", and then "show me voter fraud in SC," and then "Show me individual voter fraud in SC." What next? "Show me individual voter fraud in SC in in 2008.
FYI Stanley, seeing how you like to mention University studies- a study at the Universities of Delaware and Nebraska from 2000 to 2006, concluded that voter identification laws affecting turnout is about nothing, and voter fraud considerably benefits Democrats. Do your own research.
Tonto December 29, 2011 at 05:42 pm
Stanley, please tell me why the more the rich are taxed the richer they become. Please Stanley.
stanley seigler December 29, 2011 at 06:28 pm
@Clayton: "Answered several times Satanley, and provided several examples of voter fraud..."
regardless of what you learned at SERE or wherever... you well know NO examples of individual voter fraud at the polling place were provided...also as you well know, the only fraud the SC law addressed is "individual voter fraud at the polling place"...so why in hell would you and others provide election officials fraud examples...to confuse the issue maybe...for surely, you know the difference and know SC does NOT deal with election officials and electronic fraud which they should vice wasting time trying to suppress BO voters...eg; "Voting machines used by as many as a quarter of American voters heading to the polls in 2012 can be hacked with just $10.50 in parts and an 8th grade science education..." http://www.salon.com/2011/09/27/votinghack/ couldn't find university studies that say, "voter identification laws affecting turnout is about nothing"...anyway... agree turnout AND the "voter identification laws" are about NOTHING...basically a waste of citizens and legislators time-energy... said laws ARE a ploy of the GOPtpers to suppress BO votes...proven by facts there are NO examples of individual fraud at the polling place... the GOPtper will be surprised their antics may not work and in fact may increase turnout...BO by a landslide in 2012...BTW i like all of the GOP candidates...except huntsman...he might beat BO...THANKS TPers for not considering him...
Tonto December 29, 2011 at 06:50 pm
Stanley, you forgot BO won't get the "White Guilt" vote the DNC exploited last time. Voters won't be emotionally sucker punched again by that one. Might affect YOUR "landslide" :)
Lisa McQuade December 29, 2011 at 07:14 pm
Now Tonto, Clayton & Stanley...please no more name calling etc. The US needs a balance between liberal & conservative in order to live our values. Isn't it great that we can actually write our comments regarding issues freely!
So we need to have open minded thinking to move forward, but also value the tempered experience. It is thought that in our youth we are more liberal, but as we age we become more conservative. I do take issue with statements that de-value "gym" teachers, as it is my belief that the mind and the body must be trained in order to be a balanced person. I know...off topic..now go "play nice". lol
stanley seigler December 29, 2011 at 08:34 pm
@Lisa McQuade: The US needs a balance between liberal & conservative in order to live our values...
agree...a strong GOP party is needed...but without the BO hater element and one that does not have as JOB#1 to limit BO to one turn...and; both parties need to stop the truth spin bs...need to work for the common good...not to get rich and reelected. ps. i make an effort not to use ad hominems...apologies if i have fallen short......also, i (not a teacher) take issue with anyone who devalues any "good" teachers...believe lee iacocca said: "In a completely rational society, the best of us would be teachers and the rest of us would have to settle for something less..."

Clayton, I am not a milita I just call it like I see it. As I said, the republicans are corrupted. The democrats don't need to require everone to have a photo id to vote, because there is know widespread knowledge of voter fraud. The republicans will say anything and do anything to defeat President Obama. This voter id nonsense is just another example of how low there will go. You say it was bought up during Killers/Al Gore's campiagn. Well, if it was bought up, then it was the republicans who bought it up to try and gain some advantage. Clayton, for some reason you can't see this for what it is. You need to open up your eyes and ears before it is too late. Unless you have money, then the republicans are your party. If you want someone to look after the middle class and the poor, then President Obama is the man for you and I. The republicans , the presidential candidates are all con artist who will flip flop and won't take a position on anything like that idiot Mitt Romney. There want to go back into the pass and try Bush's policies that failed then and will fail now. Giving the so-call job creators tax breaks will not help to create jobs. It has been tried in the past and has never worked. Balancing the budget on the backs of the middle class and the poor will not make things better either. You are just sacrificing two groups of people to protect the one percent, so if you want to believe in the republican party that 's on you, but I am sticking with President Obama.
stanley seigler December 30, 2011 at 05:56 am
@Cornell Davis: "Clayton, for some reason you can't see this for what it is. You need to open up your eyes and ears..."
it's not just clayton...and my comments are not directed at clayton...he just supplies the straight lines...my hope is that others see/read and open their eyes...but "none so blind as those who will not see"
Tonto December 30, 2011 at 03:32 pm
I'll take a flip flopper any day over a communist. Of course Obama portrays himself as a smiling Robin Hood. Well, Robin Hood wasn't such a good guy. He robbed from the rich, threw some crumbs at the sucker peasants, and kept most of the loot for himself. Hate! racism! its for the children! are the phony lines. Why do the rich get richer the more the government taxes them? Will someone explain?

FYI stuff [CLIPS/quotes]
"The purpose of new voter ID laws is to demobilize certain portions of electorate who are more likely to vote for Democrats, a goal laid out by ALEC founder, Paul Weyrich many decades ago who stated that “I don’t want everybody to vote...Our leverage in the elections goes up as the voting populus goes down.” "The corporate organization behind the new spate of voter ID laws is the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC)...ALEC is a hyper-conservative Republican organization that receives 98% of its funding from corporate entities...[such as] Charles G. Koch Charitable Foundation. "ALEC drafted model ID voter legislation, and every single new voter ID law was passed with ALEC member involvement. "the Koch contribution to ALEC likely exceeds $1 million. Koch brother involvement in voter ID laws should be of particular interest...considering that David Koch’s project, Citizens for a Sound Economy, spearheaded the effort to repeal Glass-Steagall that enabled banking institutions to gamble in securities and tank the economy in 2008. [end clips] for the rest of the story goto: http://carolineheldman.wordpress.com/ and the GOP sheep "came home wagging their tails behind them"

mo FYI stuff [CLIPS/quotes]
"In 2011, a sudden wave of state-level voter restrictions in Republican-controlled states has swept the nation, just in time for the 2012 election, with 19 new laws and two executive actions on the books. "The voter ID movement is based on a bald-faced lie that voter impersonation is an issue. It’s not. As the DNC humorously notes, a person is 39 times more likely to be struck by lightning than to engage in voter impersonation, and 3,600 times more likely to report a UFO http://carolineheldman.wordpress.com/ "As Prof. Justin Levitt aptly noted, polling place photo ID restrictions are not merely a solution in search of a problem, but established that the "solution" is so ill-fitted to the grossly overstated problem as to be equated to amputating one's foot in order to cure a "potential" hangnail http://www.bradblog.com/?p=8904

Too bad the Demcrats want to steal elections by stuffing the ballot boxes and cheating :( The evidence has been posted and it clearly shows that most fraud is done by DEMOCRATS Stanley:) Republicans just want to post a speed limit on how fast they can cheat :)

Whats the difference between communism and capitalism??? One is when man exploits man and the other is the other way around.
Tonto December 31, 2011 at 05:20 am
Watch the reports from North Korea. It might help clear things up. Ask yourself why Obama wants to model the US after the European Socialist (aka new and improved communism) perfect utopia.
Mimi December 31, 2011 at 07:57 am
Tonto you don't even know what you want, what makes you think that you know what President Obama wants. What evidence or facts do you have to support your nonsense???? You know what your problem is besides the lack of intelligence???? You are a Paranoid Conspriacy Theorist. Nothing you post is factual or even believible, you are simply a racist, antagonist who doesn't even bother to research the nonsense you spew which leaves you irrevalant.
Mimi December 31, 2011 at 08:02 am
And yet Clayton you have no problem accepting the nonsense from FAUX news as facts. Really??? If you actually read the post you will find that the sources of the FACTS can easily be research and confirmed as truth. However I am pretty sure Shawn Hannity or the drugster won't be including any of it in their daily briefings, cause that would mean people like you might stop and say wait a minute that proves me wrong. Have I been duped into buying the same garbage that has been spewed out of the Republican party for over 30 years??? Am I still going to buy it even though history proves that the Republican policies have damaged our country for the profit of the few???? Truly Clayton get a clue and a life.
stanley seigler December 31, 2011 at 03:21 pm

stanley seigler December 31, 2011 at 03:50 pm
@Mimi: "the same garbage that has been spewed out of the Republican party for over 30 years???"
it been longer than 30 years...at least since the 1920's and this voter ID law is a prime example of their tactics...eg; [repeating previous CLIPs] "The voter ID movement is based on a bald-faced lie that voter impersonation is an issue... http://carolineheldman.wordpress.com/ "The purpose of new voter ID laws is to demobilize certain portions of electorate who are more likely to vote for Democrats, a goal laid out by ALEC founder, Paul Weyrich many decades ago who stated that “I don't want everybody to vote...Our leverage in the elections goes up as the voting populus goes down.” http://carolineheldman.wordpress.com/ [end clips] pls see previous post and links for details and context. sad GOPs have done it for so long they are good at it and many actually believe trickle down, voodoo, economics work...despite strong evidence to the contrary. sadder still they pander to a racist element.
Tonto December 31, 2011 at 05:19 pm
Happy New Year to you Stanley. In the end we are all Americans :) Lets hope for the best in the new year.......... hope and CHANGE :)

I am a donor. 8 years ago my husband died unexpectedly. He was a donor and I was glad that theyRead More were able to use some of his skin, his corneas, heart, etc. It's like God's gift to us was able to keep on giving to others. 3 years ago, after many years and many surgeries and repairs, I needed a new ACL- ligament in my knee, thanks to a donor I have one. It's like the circle keeps going. And which one of us would not give an organ to our family, to our children, if it was a match?
