State Rep. Ted Vick Withdraws from Congressional Race

Vick was arrested in Columbia Thursday morning with a female student from USC in his car and a pistol in his pocket.

A state representative running for the 7th Congressional District announced his plans to withdraw from the race just one day after his arrest in Columbia.

Rep. Ted Vick, D-Chesterfield, announced on Friday he would end his Congressional campaign.

“After spending time with my family, my pastor and my friends, I have decided to end my campaign for the United States Congress," Vick said in a press release. "While I have full confidence that the legal system will clear much of this up, it will not change the fact that I made some serious mistakes that I alone am responsible for. I realize that I have caused pain to those who love and support me and it’s my responsibility to make this right."

Vick, who was arrested in Columbia early Thursday morning, had a female USC student in his car and a pistol in his pocket when an officer took him into custody, according to a police report.

Vick was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, unlawful carrying of a pistol and speeding.

Vick said that he will seek re-election in November as a state representative.

Read his full statement below:

“After spending time with my family, my pastor and my friends, I have decided to end my campaign for the United States Congress.

While I have full confidence that the legal system will clear much of this up, it will not change the fact that I made some serious mistakes that I alone am responsible for. I realize that I have caused pain to those who love and support me and it’s my responsibility to make this right.

Now is the time to allow the legal system to work, time for me to concentrate on my family and time for me to focus on the needs of my State House constituents.

I look forward to spending more time at home with my family and constituents. I will humbly seek re-election to the State House in November. If re-elected I will continue to work across party aisles to seek consensus and progress.”

knowing how the legal system works, I would be curious to know if his DUI is nol pros, or dropped down to reckless driving. I would hope that someone would keep track of the prosecution of this case. I have seen many cases where because they knew someone their cases were dropped or they got a slap on the hand. Maybe our patch reporter will continue to follow this casef?

It is actually fairly common practice to lower a first offense DUI to wreckless driving if the person does not have other negative items on their record and depending on the circumstances of the DUI. For instance if there was a wreck or property damages it would be unlikely to be lowered. As far as I am concerned his possesion of a firearm while intoxicated is reason enough to maintain the DUI charge.

Whoever wrote this piece...."Vick was arrested in Columbia Thursday morning with a female student from USC in his car and a pistol in his pocket".... must be an idiot. You should have added that " he had a pack of condoms in his billfold, two empty beer cans in the floor board, a half pack of cigarettes, a blow up doll in the back seat and two Hustler magazines in his car.
It simply shows that the writer is a right wing moron seeking to find as much bad as she could to write about.

Funny thing when a left winger gets in trouble it is the "right wing" writer that is the moron. Just does not add up. Not only get your head out of the sand but don't follow your fellow left winger so close.

Mr. Dowd police reports are full of lots of information, one thing I did fail to mention is that he did have an expired concealed weapons permit in wallet. These are public records and whether it is a Democrat or a Republican arrested, we do have access to those documents and do report that information. We reported on Mr. Vick's arrest just as we have other arrests of candidates running for the 7th Congressional District. If you are interested, I would encourage you to blog on Patch. It's platform where people can voice their opinions and write about things of interest to them.

Funny, it is always the right-wing picking on those poor left-wingers. Stick it to them if they are violating the law....right or left, doesn't matter. Maybe George Bush coerced this guy into doing things he didn't want to do.

Yep! That's it! Poor old George did it! LOL He has taken the blunt of just about everything for the past several years! According to the moron teacher in NC, those who spoke against George Bush were arrested! If that were the case, the jails would be overflowing. I have never seen a man take so much flack, and most of it wasn't even true. PLEASE GIVE HIM BACK THE WHITE HOUSE! He at least is a proven citizen, isn't a Muslim and respects our country! He may not have been the brightest bulb in the box, but compared to what we have seen from Mr. Wonderful, George had more smarts in his left boot!
As for Mr. Vick, I don't see why the woman in the car needed to be brought out, unless she was kidnapped. I guess to further humiliate him and his family. DUI's are a bad thing. He should pay the price for that, just as everyone else does. Who was with him has nothing to do with it. The expired gun permit, well, at least he did have one, just slipped his mind more than likely. We all forget things. I hope he can get things cleaned up and his family stays in tack.

Hi K.B., thanks for joining the conversation. A few things though, regardless of anyone's opinion of the success or failure of the Bush presidency he is Constitutionally barred from getting the White House back. The 22nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution limits a president to two terms, or a maximum of 10 years in cases where a vice-president is elevated to the presidency during the term of another president - if that president resigns, is assassinated, dies in office, is removed from office, or is incapacitated in some way and unable to perform the duties of the president. Secondly that same Constitution prohibits any kind of religious test for people seeking office, so even if Barack Obama were a Muslim that would have absolutely no bearing on his fitness to serve as president. And finally, at this point I doubt there is anything that will convince a birther that Obama was born in Hawaii, but I've yet to hear a plausible explanation as to how he was able to time travel to the 1960s and insert birth announcements into two Hawaiian newspapers, but if you've got one I'd love to hear it.

Jonathan, thank you for responding to my remarks. I was only being sarcastic about Bush taking the White House back. I am sure he wants no part of the White House!
As for the current resident, I certainly hope he will be moving out soon. He has done more to divide this Nation than any president I have seen in my lifetime! He is constantly playing the "Poor Me, Poor Half Black Me, card!" Our Frist Lady openly shows distaste for whites and the country.
People are loosing there homes, going to bed hungry, out of work and our Queen takes trips, costing a fortune! They think they are the King and Queen of America!
Futhermore, it isn't that he is a Muslim per say, but it is we are AT WAR with Muslims and our President is placing Muslims in key positions in our government and military!
I question eveything about this man who popped up out of nowhere. He is a fraud, a liar and a smooth talker. I have never known a canidate who has done so much to hide who he was/is. They have gone to great lengths to hide answers. WHY does he place himself in this trouble? He is a well trained lawyer and dances on the fine line of honesty. He is trained on deceit, and how to hustle and con those around him. There are so many lies on his dance card, school records being withheld, birth certficate not being shown! His motives are not honest ones, like a criminal in our system, he knows a doubt is as good as a win! No proof and you can say or do anything. DOUBT=A WIN.

??? This comment (from KB McDaniel) was so bizarre I wouldn't even know how to respond. There wasn't ANYTHING there based on reality. By the way, how many birth certificates of previous presidents have you actually seen? Obama's was the first for me, and by the way, McCain was not born in ANY of the 50 states nor Wash DC, but no one in the Democratic Party thought it was valid to challenge HIS eligibility for office. This birther movement is the most absurd diversion I have seen in national politics.

@K. B. McDaniel: ‘...compared to what we have seen from Mr. Wonderful, George had more smarts in his left boot!’

too cute and not so cute comments add nothing...actually detract from enlightened comparison of people and issues...not that IQ smarts mean much...but for the record:

“...[study] rated G.W. Bush second to last since 1900, with an estimated IQ of 125 (the estimates ranged from 111 to 139). Bush's estimated IQ was only higher than those estimated for Grant (120), Monroe (124), and Harding (124). The same study estimated Clinton's IQ at 149, behind only those of Kennedy (151), Jefferson (154) and J. Quincy Adams (169).” [Believe BO’s around 150]

on to a more relevant issue “what we have seen”:

FROM W: the worst economic conditions since 1929; an unpaid for war lied into; there must be something positive...what?

FROM BO: health care for 30-40 million; DJI around 13000 (around 6000 in 2008); jobs increasing (were decreasing 2008); GM and Detroit saved (GM now #1 car producer in the world); economy pulled out of 2008 ditch...to name a few.

Back to left boot IQ crap...colin powell avg student at not ivy college (NY City)...but would make a great president...so much for IQ and ivy league colleges.

All said:

It’s not about W v BO smarts...it’s about the FAILED (1929, 2008), voodoo, trickle UP, T-GOP policies v progressive DEM policies that hauled our country out GOP ditch.

@Stanley Seigler,
My methinks statement was posted as a reply to Mr. K. B. McDaniel's comment. I apologize for any confusion. I totally agree with you that there are way too many that hear, see and read things that they know are wrong, yet they do not protest. It is like things were years ago when most people had stopped using the "N" word, at least in public. Still there were a few that kept right on using it as though nobody minded. I always expressed my distaste while others only tried to ignore it. The same goes now when I read what is to me obvious hate and prejudice. I will say so while others allow it to pass. That is how Germany slowly slipped into what they became in the 1930's and 40's. I've enjoyed reading your comments here. Keep speaking out even when others disagree.

I stated my view, it is my right, I am NOT a racist, I am a citizen of the USA who feels our leader is lying to us. I don't care if Obama is green, it is his actions that speak to me, not his color! Every time someone disagrees with you Obama worshipers, you throw out the race crap.
IF YOU WANT TO SEE A MAN'S TRUE CHARACTER, GIVE HIM SOME POWER!
Obama's character is showing. Open your eyes, you are more interested in being politically/Hollywood correct, than watching what is being said and done.
BOTTOM LINE, I don't trust Obama. He doesn't add up. To many things are being hidden. His past relationships with those who have questionable characters, such as his Pastor, J. Wright. His childhood was influenced by those who hate the West and everyone who wasn't a Muslim. He was raised in a radical environment, some of that surely rubbed off on him.
So he has a high IQ. It does not make him a honorable man. I would rather have a president with a lower IQ and more honesty.
Go online and read the bio of A. Hitler. The way he took over Germany. It was a subtle change, slowly removing the rights of the people, until he had so much control he could do anything to anyone. Mr.High IQ is a master of manipulation, he is not a fool, but a calculated thief and liar. I don't hate him, I hate what he is trying to do to our Country. WAKE UP! Look at what is being done, not what is being said with a silver tongue!
HE KNOWS EXACTLY WHAT HE IS DOING! Watch out!

facts that back yo 'not-racist(?)' opine could/would convince one that you are not racist..."where's the meat"...or is it just opine...similar to that of a racist...

Our president should never bow to anyone other than God. But, I guess we will continue to present ourselves as a weak nation as we show deference to Muslim leaders. Do I hate Obama? NO! Am I predjudiced toward him? NO! Do I dislike his policies and practices? YES!!! (Prejudice-an unfavorable opinion formed beforehand) I formed my opinion based on the last four years of unrestrained government gluttony and giveaway at my (I would say our, but I don't know if you pay taxes or not) expense! I know what you are thinking and it isn't true. I do not support Mitt Romney.

modified agreement: should never bow in a subservient manner...but OK and should to show respect for customs of another’s country...there are enough "ugly americans". our pres doesnt have to be one.

BO haters never miss an opportunity to purposely mis-state BO’s actions/words...bet;
if BO had been seen holding hands with saudi prince abdullah, as was W...the right wing-nuts would still be pointing out BO was gay.

re: ‘we show deference to Muslim leaders.’

wrong again! BO/we show respect...not deference

re: ‘Do I [peter] hate Obama? NO!’

cudda fooled me...but if you can cite examples of what you see as ‘four years of unrestrained government gluttony and giveaway’ (over and above that of 2000-08, the W years)...then I might vote for T-GOP candidates and embrace their ideals...

The Japanese bow to each other and it's common to bow to royalty, that it offends you really isn't a national concern. Did the sky fall when president Bush held hands with that Saudi prince? I think killing at will Muslim terrorists in Muslim countries without their permission negates any perceived notion that we're weak. Indeed, it proves we're polite and knowledgeable of other cultures, and only an ignorant fool would consider manners and knowledge weakness.

Unfettered and unrestrained are words that mean things. Your use of them here is textbook hyperbole. Nobody is surprised by your use of it. The current GOP on the internet is basically a bunch of bumbling terrorists promoting hysteria. I don't always agree with Stanleys approach, but at least he isn't a poorly veiled racist regurgitating lies he heard from an increasingly radicalized GOP mouthpiece.

The military budget for 2013 is 500B, +-. You're either willfully misrepresenting BO (those are his initials, not some crappy fried chicken joke) budget or you don't have any idea what you're talking about. As a vet and somebody who continues to work with the military I can say that without concerning myself with the numbers, I like and have advocated myself for his plan to reduce the amount of standing army that we pay to feed "in case" we need to do some occupying and nation building and invest in the capabilities that we actually will need for the future, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, counterterrorism, countering weapons of mass destruction and the ability to operate in environments where adversaries try to deny us access. I admit this does make it hard to start a fight with Iran like the GOPs desires.

Most of our debt is to our own SS, you know, the thing that won't exist 20 years from now, and not the Chinese. Don't ever let facts get in the way of your trumpeting your ideology though, not matter how wrong it is.

You know, put a frog in a pot of water and slowly turn up the temparature and he will eventually boil to death because he doesn't feel the change. Talk to any old Japenese folks about December 7, 1941 about what downsizing your military in a violet world gets you. Talk to the French about how it feels to have Nazi's in your living room. We need less fighting men and women. Because we have highly capable and mobile aircraft carriers and bombers that have around the world range. We don't need a standing army today for a few reasons, because of the 2nd amendment, because we can draft a standing army, and because we don't have an adversary that can march on us.

I assume you meant Americans on December 7 1941, our military wasn't downsized. For that matter neither was the Japanese at any time during WWII. We were complacent, but not undermanned. The French are famous for rolling over, share a border with Germany (are you worried about Mexico or Canada?) and Germany at the time was the worlds most formidable fighting force outside of us. Guess who is still the worlds most formidable fighting force by many magnitudes? For what purpose?

I'm all for defense, but we don't need cavalry anymore. Progress happened and continues to.

I know that no matter what anyone says you're going to say that poor Americans are "entitled" because you've been brainwashed, but are you REALLY going to stand by "we sat on our behinds and watched as the German and Japanese War Machines grew bigger and bigger and did nothing but enjoy our overly luxurious lifestyles" during the Great Depression? You do know that is what immediately preceded WWII, don't you? FFS.

I'm for the sustained or even increased funding of the JSOC and other small mobile forces like the Marines and the Rangers; they along with technologically advanced weaponry are the future of warfare. Fighter Air Force is redundant and infantry Army is unnecessary most of the time and easy to ramp up.

I never said that there will never be another WW or that the reason was because of technology.

The Mexican "invasion" you talk about has been abating for some time due to the economy and increased application of the law under the current administration. You likely won't acknowledge the truth of this because it directly conflicts with what you've been told and what you trumpet, but according to the Immigration and Customs Enforcement the annual number of deportations has been stable but increasing over the last few years: 370,000 in Fiscal Year 2008, 390,000 in FY 2009, 393,000 in FY 2010, and 397,000 in FY 2011.

Also, the word unrestrained means something totally different than what you think.

this approach is used by some/many T-GOPs...they attribute a statement to you (anybody) you never made...then try to disprove something you/anyone never said...not sure just what logic fallacy applies...but;

in general (beside the ad homeniun fallacy) maybe the following applies...

"Argumentum ad Ignorantiam: (appeal to ignorance) the fallacy that a proposition is true simply on the basis that it has not been proved false or that it is false simply because it has not been proved true. This error in reasoning is often expressed with influential [hyperbolic] rhetoric."

when their premise is shown to be obviously wrong...T-GOPs just move on to another baseless premise/conclusion...ie, move the goal posts.

on the positive side their baseless, unfounded, premises/conclusions provide the opportunity to bring out the facts ...and maybe some minds are changed...

And while I want to point out that logical fallacies are used by people of all stripes, I have to admit their use is becoming increasingly prevalent by current GOP supporters. Here hoping the desperation signals we're near the end of the radicalized GOP and a return towards the center and putting country before ideology/party.
