Poll: Should Younger Children Be on Facebook?

The social media giant is considering the move, according to reports.

Nearly 565,000 South Carolina children younger than 18 are on Facebook.

And, according to recent reports in the Washington Post and Wall Street Journal, that number may soon be growing.

The giant social network is considering allowing for children under 13 to open accounts, albeit with safety measures and nested inside parental accounts.

Do you think children younger than 13 should be allowed on Facebook?

My sons are 7 and 5. I hear that teenagers can stir up quite the drama on Facebook. But if sharing photos and status updates on Facebook is the worst thing they're doing in 5-7 years, with my supervision, I'm okay with it.

As the father of two teenagers, I reommend that you delay your sons' foray into the bottomless pit that is facebook. Threats, bullying and insidious behavior are mainstays. Take them camping instead.

SDR, what are you doing online? Shouldn't you be out camping?

There are obviously only two possible outcomes Chris. Insidious behavior on the evil internets or wholesome camping, maybe with a scout group or church group as nothing bad has EVER happened with those types of people, since they're conservatives.

Apparently it's only the rarest of parents that manage to allow their children to experience a complete life, Chris. That I'm one of them makes me feel blessed. I guess that is why it seems EASY to me to raise well rounded children who do well in school in spite of "the liberal agenda", who play sports and camp and play outside and ride motorcycles AND play video games and are computer literate.

FWIW, my kids DON'T have Facebook accounts. They do have email with limited capability and they do look at youtube and various other sites and even some of the kids "social networking" sites like Club Penguin and Moshi Monsters, as well as XBox Live. I have a proxy and a firewall and I check where they've been.

I remember when engaged parenting was a conservative value. It doesn't generate a profit, so it's no longer important...

What are you doing on the internet on a Saturday afternoon? I was kayaking with my kids. You're making half baked quips on the internet? Yeah, everybody sees exactly what you mean. Hypocrisy is the basis of the modern Republicans values system.
