Patch Contest: Appreciate Your Teacher

In honor of Teacher Appreciation Week, we're giving away a free $50 gift card to a local teacher and a $25 card to the reader who appreciates them.

It can be a thankless job, teaching.

You're settling drama-filled arguments about who sits next to whom.

You're sorting out who's telling the truth when someone starts crying and everyone's pointing fingers.

And you're always taking work home with you, whether it's papers to grade or kids you're worrying about.

While homeroom moms and parents are working this week to honor teachers during Teacher Appreciation Week, Patch thought it would give a shout-out as well.

We'd like to award a Midlands-area teacher with a $50 gift card to thank them for everything they do. And we're looking for your help.

Just post a comment below to tell us the name and the school of the teacher you'd like to recognize. Tell us why you've chosen them. And next Monday, we'll randomly select one to win a $50 gift card.

And if your comment is selected, we'll give you a $25 gift card as well.

Just nominate one teacher per comment, but you can post as many different comments (with other teachers) as you'd like. And encourage others to do the same, since the more commenters your favorite teacher gets, the better their chance of winning.

Here are the obligatory rules:

  • Open to legal residents of the 50 United States, the District of Columbia who are 18 and older.
  • To enter, leave a comment on this story telling us who you think is the best teacher in Lexington and Richland counties, where they teach and why you chose them.
  • All entries must be received by noon Eastern Time, May 14, 2012.
  • You may enter one comment per user for each teacher you're nominating. You may enter multiple comments for multiple teachers.
  • Two winners will be selected in one random drawing.
  • One (1) Grand Prize Winner will receive a $50 Visa gift card for being the Midlands best teacher. Approximate Retail Value: $50. One (1) reader will receive a $25 Visa gift card for nominating the teacher. Approximate Retail Value: $25.
  • Click here for complete Official Rules.

I will get things started here, since some of you are being shy and I can't win anyway.

The teachers that made the biggest impact on me growing up were:

Donna Shealy, my first-grade teacher at Oak Grove Elementary School
Sherri Morrison, my newspaper adviser at Lexington High School
Karen Croxton, my quiz bowl and science olympics coach at Lexington High School
Laura McMahan, my Teacher Cadet teacher at Lexington High School
Ms. Dantzler, quiz bowl teacher at Lexington Middle School

My children have only lived here one year, but Michelle Enright at Pleasant Hill Elementary School is outstanding. As is the entire staff at Pilgrim Lutheran Church preschool program is fantastic, as well.

The teacher that had the most impact on my life was Lisa Gantt, my high school Chemistry I and AP teacher. By the tenth grade I knew I was going to go to college and major in a hard science discipline, I just didn't know which one. Her love of Chemistry and the joy she showed in teaching inspired me to choose Chemical Engineering. Three degrees and nearly twenty years later, that passion still lives on in my professional career.

Kim, these are great nominations. If you would post a separate comment for each one, it will greatly increase the odds of one of them winning (as well as you).

Ginny Freiburger (now at Pleasant Hill Elementary) was my daughter's preschool teacher at Saxe-Gothe CDC. My little girl went from "I'm not going to preschool and YOU CAN't MAKE ME!" to "Why can't I go EVERY DAY?" under Miss Ginny's care and guidance. As her first teacher, Ginny created an environment of love, support, care and acceptance that has allowed my child to flourish in elementary school. She will always have a special place in my heart as well as my daughter's heart.

Betsy Goodman, EAGLES teacher at Pleasant Hill Elementary School, has had a profound impact on my older daughter's elementary school education. Mrs. Goodman inspires her students to challenge themselves and their way of thinking, and to step outside their comfort zone and try new things. Mrs. Goodman truly understands the nature and needs of gifted learners, and she appreciates their unique qualities and inquisitive minds. She makes a difference every day.

Mrs Amy Dickson, 2nd grade teacher at HE Corley Elementary school. My daughter had Mrs Dickson for 1st grade and then she moved up to teaching second grade so we were lucky enough to have her two years in a row. She is great with her students and inspires them to learn.

I have so many but today I will speak of an exceptional teacher at Gilbert Primary School, Mrs Suzi Davidson. In total she taught both my children over 4 years between K5 and 2nd grade in the Multi-Age Program there. She is an amazing Lady in so many ways but most especially in her love for our children. My kids will soon be on their way to 5th and 7th grade but they will always be part of Mrs Davidson's Awesome All Star Team and no matter what she made them feel that way, She did AMAZING work my children and I know that I could call her today and she would do whatever she could to help my children or ME and that is over and above the call of duty. I love my friend Suzi!! Gilbert is lucky to have her! (P.S. they both still use a lot of your techniques to study) AB
