One Richland Two elementary schools earned special recognition for its magnet program after less than three years in existence.
North Springs Elementary School was named a Magnet School of Distinction by the Magnet Schools of America. School leaders will receive the award at the Magnet Schools of America Conference in May.
The magnet at North Springs, called STEMS, focuses on science, technology engineering and mathematics.
Students use advanced technology to study the intersections between science and math. The also participate in field studies and hands-on investigations.
"This award is the result of hard work on the part of every member of the North Springs Elementary family," Principal David Holzendorf. "STEMS lead teacher Dr. Sally Catoe and the faculty and staff with the support of our district work hard every day to provide experiences that are both interesting and meaningful to all of our boys and girls."
The Magnet Schools Association national award program is based on a commitment to high academic standards, curriculum innovation, successful desegregation/diversity efforts and the consistent delivery of quality services to all school stakeholders.
