Shaquan Duley, an Orangeburg mother who pleaded guilty to killing two of her children before staging a watery crash, is sentenced this morning to 35 years in prison.

The judge was considering a term between a minimum of 30 years to life.

The story prompted memories of Susan Smith, a Union County mother who killed her two sons by submerging her car into an Upstate lake before blaming their disappearance on a carjacking.

35 years? For killing two children? Shame on the judge. He should have sentenced her to life.

Did you read the transcripts from the trial? Were you there? How do you know whether or not the judge found extenuating circumstances? Why are people so quick for revenge against someone they do not even know over something for which they only know the most basic of facts. In reality, after 35 years in prison this woman's life will be over. Relax, you will probably be long gone as well.

@William: No, no and I don't know or care. There is absolutely no extenuating circumstances I, or anyone else, can think of that justifies her killing her children.

Why not 35 years for each to run consecutively?

Don't SC have a death penalty? Looks like she met all the creteria. No justice for those poor children. Hope she does not last long in jail. I hate to feed scum.

It's too expensive to sentence someone to death. The average state pays around $240M in legal fees to cover the cost of prosecution and appeals. It's cheaper and easier to sentence someone to life.
